Climate Action Plan

Twenty-one Points for the 21st Century: Global Greens Climate Action Plan

Please contribute your proposal or comments to our data bank of practical ideas and experiences for tackling the climate crisis and its impacts. This data bank will be a resource in its own right. It will also be a source of ideas for developing the "Twenty-one Points for the 21st Century: Global Greens Climate Action Plan" that will be presented to the Second Global Greens Congress in Sao Paulo in May 2008.

We welcome ideas and proposals covering all fields relating to how we meet the climate crisis: political, social, environmental, cultural, economic, and more.

Initiating a "Year-long Global Sabbatical" for reducing CO2 emission and energy-resources use

Project Abstract:
Initiating a first ever "Global Sabbath/Rest Year" which will recommence once every several years thereafter. Global Warming is the consequence of humanity's profound material progress since industrialization's start, 3 or 4 hundred years ago. As a result of this, the 7-day-week time division model continues to dominate Homo Sapien lifestyles and consequently Earth. Such a time division model, however, is not ecologically based but is rooted on the compromise between the oppressor and the oppressed. This time system impedes ecosystem processes from running efficiently, and alienates humans from Nature. Furthermore, in spite of current efforts to protect some natural areas, the biosphere still lacks an adequate amount of time to mitigate the historical impacts of economic development.

global carbon accounting

Project Abstract:
Managing the shift to a low carbon world requires a new level of global cooperation, and therefore a global system of reporting, transparency and accountability. Gaining consensus and action for the rule of law on this issue is critical for achieving global justice. Therefore, globally transparent and accountable measuremnts of how is working, and where, and who is benefitting, and how much, are absolutely essential. The simpler and more widely accessible this documentation is will determine how much it can contribute to more democratic global processes. I suggest web-based, globally monitored and agreed up measures of carbon emissions, with globally citizen-based administration, independent of other institutions.

Greens – sun-powered!

Project Abstract:
Direct solar energy is by far the largest source of fully sustainble energy worldwide. Less than 1% of the world’s land area, much of it on building roofs and in arid areas, would be needed to supply all the world’s energy requirements in a completely sustainable manner. Solar power is abundant, peaceful and cannot be monopolised. In many countries, the Greens are already recognised as the solar party. Let us make this a global strategy.

13 points from Sri Lanka

Project Abstract:
Climate change is the top most priority of the conference. Henceforth, it's absolutely important to use this opportunity with the maximum productivity. For the first time in the modern history, a global political movement is giving a real value to the catastrophe of Global Warming; the most serious problem mankind has ever faced thanks to the western way of living. As far as Sri-Lanka is concern, we are now experiencing what is known to be effects of Global warming. Heavy rains in the off season have already destroyed almost all the crops in the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts. Destruction of agriculture is far worse than we could expect. Sri-Lanka is not the only country who's experiencing this. It won't be long that millions of Bangladeshi people have to leave their home in the costal low lands and start to move upland. Likewise millions in the African region and millions in central Asia will go out of water, if we won't use our every available source to combat Global warming in an effective way. The biggest burden will be put on to the poorest parties in the stage by the parties directly responsible for the emissions. To overcome this dark future, we all must ensure Global Greens conference-2008 meet the call of mother earth. It is absolutely important that we won't be waiting for others to put the input needed but we put the input ourselves. That is the only way that we can make the event an all out success.

Action on global security due to climate change!

Project Abstract:
Future Climate and its impacts could well trigger bloody wars fought over access to basic necessities like drinking water. The green house effect is causing melting of mountain glaciers that are precious reservoirs of clean water leading to water insecurity in the long term on the one hand and glacial related disasters like GLOFs in the form of Mountain Tsunamis on the other hand. That means not only would the melt destroy the world’s freshwater reservoirs but it is also projected to cause floods and droughts, reduce the area of arable land, adversely impact fish and food stock causing food insecurity and hunger too. That in turn could trigger large movement of populations to safer areas. There will be increase in the number of climate refugees whose livelihood will totally be at greater risk. Large scale migration and huge competition for limited resources could become a serious security challenge.

Index of Human Rights

Project Abstract:
Global warming cannot be addressed by authoritarian governments, dictatorship or fascism. Saving the planet from climate change can only succeed if all people are empowered to take part in the great project of achieving sustainability. An index of Human Rights in the UN is an important instrument to help bring this about.
