Workshop: the human rights situation in China and the current developments in Tibet
In the last few weeks we have witnessed an uprising against the Chinese authorities repressive policies on the Tibetan plateau, the likes of which we have not seen in a generation. A terrifying crackdown has begun on a scale never seen before in Tibet, in the full glare of the world's attention just months before the Olympics in Beijing.
We are deeply concerned by the way in which the Chinese authorities are planting the seeds of animosity between the Chinese and the Tibetan people in the PRC through the selective way in which they are representing the crisis.
On the 10th of April the EU Parliament called for the unconditional opening of talks between China and the Dalai Lama and therefore continued to exert pressure on China to improve the situation of Tibet and the human rights situation in the whole country. If the Chinese government wants to hold the Olympic Games in a dignified way, it has to address these problems in a constructive, forward thinking way as soon as possible.
Most importantly, the Chinese government has to open without pre-conditions a constructive dialogue with the Dalai Lama. The European Parliament keeps the option open for a boycott of the Olympic Games opening ceremony, should there be no resumption of substantive and result-oriented negotiations between the Chinese Authorities and the Dalai Lama. Besides the European Green Party, gathered at its 8th Council Meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia, adopted a resolution, strongly condemning all acts of violence that took place in the streets of Lhasa and in Tibet and the brutal repression by the Chinese security forces of Tibetan demonstrators and expressed its deep concern about the policy of assimilation of the People's Republic of China for Tibet as well as for other minorities like the Uyghurs;
