Greens' Post-Kyoto Protocol Agenda

The Kyoto Protocol on climate change finishes in 2012. Negotiations for the global regime to follow the Kyoto Protocol are well underway and due to be completed by the end of 2009. What are the important demands which the Greens should be making in these negotiations and how can we coordinate our efforts to get the best outcome for the Earth, for humanity and for nature. The Greens Bali Declaration is a starting point.

Post Kyoto Action Plan for Greens

This proposal is by SHUJI Imamoto, Chairperson of ECOLO JAPAN, Japan Greens Network.

For “Post-Kyoto”, namely for building a common international framework after 2012, we Greens will all campaign for government and industry to set much higher mandatory targets to realize large-scale reductions in GHG emissions, possibly by each social sector. In the campaign, we should focus the possible highest targets on electricity companies, some responsible industry sectors (related to oil and plastic, cement, iron and paper) and transportations (vehicles and airplanes), all of which make the main cause of GHG emissions in domestic part of the country. For example, we should call for realization of a national and regional binding law to clear the targets and its effective process, such as Climate Change Bill in England or currently deliberating Lieberman-Warner Bill in U.S.
